Sunday school classes for everyone

Sunday school classes at Mount VernonMount Vernon offers a Sunday school class for people from ages 2 to 102! If you and your children are not involved in a class, drop in on a class or two and give it a try. You'll find extraordinary teachers and discussion leaders, inspiring lessons, and friendly folks. Not only does small-group study help strengthen your relationship with God, but it builds and strengthens relationships among group members.

All classes meet from 9:45 until 10:45 a.m. unless otherwise noted. A nursery is provided for children younger than 4.


Sunday school class iconTop-Quality NurseryTrained adult nursery workers care for the youngest members of the Mount Vernon family on Sunday mornings. The nursery is also offered on Wednesday evenings for the fellowship supper at 5:45 p.m. and programs at 6:30 p.m., and for other church services, rehearsals, and events, as needed.

Sunday school class for 2 and 3 year olds

Sunday school class icon 2, 3, and 4 Year Olds – Our preschoolers hear simple Bible stories, enjoy learning activities, sing, and play together. Meets in Room E-126. Leader: Joyce Underwood

iconChildren Age 4 through 5th Grade – Stories of our faith come alive for our children in Godly Play, a Montessori-based interactive religious program offered at Mount Vernon since 2010. The children meet in two specially equipped classrooms upstairs in the education building.

Parents, if you are not familiar with Godly Play, you will want to see it for yourself in order to appreciate this deeply spiritual and highly creative program for your children. Learn about Godly Play in this video. See a Godly Play lesson in this video.


iconYouth - Age 6th Grade through 12th Grade   Our youth Sunday school class hears stories of our Christian faith and responds with discussion and creative activities. Meets in Room E220, second floor of the education building.

icon"Boomers" Class On December 3, the Rev. Dr. Kelly Hawkins presents excerpts from college lectures on Women in the Bible. Leaders: Gary Benefield, Larry Oldham. Meets in room 208 (2nd floor, above the sacristy and parlor), 9:45 - 10:30 a.m. "Baby boomers" (those born between 1946 and 1964, approximately)

iconC.S.I. - Central (Christians Seeking Instruction)
Leader: Ken Larking. Starting a new video series,“Prophets and Kings,” on December 3, which shows archeological sites in Israel. This will give us a better idea of how people lived during biblical times, and will help us to better appreciate events in the Bible and how they apply to our lives today. Meets in the new classroom downstairs from the office. Breakfast together in the classroom most Sundays. Geared toward those "in the 'central' or middle part of life.

iconLandis Class – The Landis Class uses lecture series from The Teaching Company, which are created by professors at major universities across the country. The current series is taught by Dr. Bart Ehrman, Chairman, Department of Religious Studies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Following the televised lecture, the class discusses the material.
Leader: Linwood Wright. Meets in room 104 (the Hamlin-Buchanan room, next to the church office). All ages.

iconFellowship Class – This class follows the widely used International Sunday School Lessons using the New International Version Bible, with the suggested study guides in both the Serendipity Bible and the Standard Lesson Commentary.
Leader: Dr. Frank Wickers. Meets in the Winn Chapel. Middle-age and older adults.
