Ministries for Children at Mount Vernon
Childcare is offered during both of the Sunday worship services, as well as for Sunday school, Wednesday night suppers, and other events as needed. Our goal is to provide a safe, loving, top-quality nursery for our youngest children. Our nursery is staffed by trained, caring adults.
Pagers for parents are available.
Feedback from parents is always welcome.
CHILDREN IN WORSHIP
Children are an integral part of the worshiping community. They are encouraged to stay for the whole Sunday worship service at any age and especially as they enter elementary school. Worship bags that include a children’s activity page may be found in the hall outside the church office. The material in these bags helps keep little hands busy as the children absorb the wonders of worship.
A story time for children is led by our pastor and lay volunteers during most 11 a.m. services. After the story time, preschoolers are invited to go to "Children's Church" (childcare) if they do not wish to stay for the remainder of the worship service.
Third through eighth graders are invited to serve as acolytes.
GODLY PLAY (On summer break)
Our Godly Play program includes four-year-olds through fifth-graders. Godly Play is a method of Christian formation and spiritual direction for children that features engaging storytelling, beautiful objects that illustrate the message, and materials that encourage a creative response. Based on the teachings of Maria Montessori and Jerome Berryman, Godly Play teaches children the art of using religious language to help them become more aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives. The children meet in the Godly Play rooms on Sundays, 9:45–10:45 a.m. (with a summer break). For more on Godly Play, see Sunday School.
MUSIC (On summer break)
Children at Mount Vernon gather for music during part of the Sunday School/Godly Play hour, and enjoy learning old-time and new songs. We sing songs that help children learn biblical and religious ideas. We play Orff instruments and handbells. Our children sing often at the 11 a.m. worship service and participate in musicals. They rehearse for the musicals on Wednesday nights, 6:30 - 7:15 p.m.
Pageants and musicals performed by our children and special holiday celebrations and activities are some of the highlights of the church year at Mount Vernon. Through stories, crafts, games, and even refreshments, our children learn about our faith.
Children's House, Mount Vernon's preschool, has classes for children ages 2 through 4, and daycare for children from ages 6 weeks through 4 years (7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.).
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: Usually in June, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Each summer all children in the community between the ages of 4 and 11 are welcomed to Mount Vernon Church for a week of Bible stories, drama, crafts, music, games, and lots more.
